NeuroArts Academy: Therapeutic Microschool

Learn About Our Curriculum

At NeuroArts Academy, learning is an immersive, whole-child experience. Our integrated, unit-based curriculum weaves together core subjects alongside the arts and life skills, all connected through a unifying monthly theme. These themes aren’t just topics, they’re gateways into meaningful exploration, designed to ignite curiosity and make learning relevant and engaging. By blending academic foundations with creative expression and real-world application, we ensure that every child, especially those who think and learn differently, can see themselves in the learning process. Each day is a chance to build knowledge through hands-on projects, collaborative experiences, and sensory-supportive environments that honor the diverse ways neurodivergent minds thrive.

Daily Activites

MindRise

BrainBuild

BrainBuild

MindRise is our daily morning meeting that supports regulation, focus, and emotional readiness for the day. It includes student-led goal setting, the introduction of our daily or weekly theme, and guided moments of mindfulness to help students feel grounded and prepared.

This consistent routine fosters self-awareness, supports transitions, and helps each learner start their day feeling safe, seen, and ready to engage.

BrainBuild

BrainBuild

BrainBuild

BrainBuild is our main lesson time, where we dive into each unit with an explorer’s mindset. During this block, students engage in burst lessons, short and focused teaching moments, followed by hands-on, applied academic work that brings learning to life.

Whether exploring science, history, math, or literacy, BrainBuild encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity. It is where core concepts are introduced and immediately made meaningful through projects, discussion, and discovery.

ThinkLab

BrainBuild

Think Lab is our self-directed, project based learning time where students take the lead. Older students dive into personal projects based on their interests, whether connected to our current theme or something entirely their own, building research, planning, and creative problem solving skills along the way.

For younger students, Think Lab includes explorative learning centers that invite hands on discovery, imaginative play, and early project work. Think Lab empowers all learners to follow their curiosity, make meaningful choices, and grow as independent thinkers.

NeuroFlow

NeuroFlow is our mid-morning transition period that offers students a chance to reset and recharge after core academics. This free-flowing break includes a small snack and self-directed time, allowing students to move, create, rest, or connect in ways that feel right for their bodies and minds.

NeuroFlow supports regulation and autonomy, helping students transition smoothly into our Creative Arts Labs feeling nourished, grounded, and ready to engage.

Creative Arts/Music

Creative Arts/Music

Creative Arts Lab is a dynamic, two-part block where students explore self-expression, movement, and creativity. Each day is split into two rotating sessions. One half always includes a music therapy group supporting connection, regulation, and expression through rhythm and sound.

The second half offers a rotating mix of activities including visual art, dance, building, STEM challenges, sensory play, or student choice projects. This structure allows students to engage both sides of the brain, follow their interests, and experience the arts as a powerful part of learning and growth.

BrainFuel

Creative Arts/Music

After a full morning of learning and creativity, students enjoy a relaxed lunch followed by outdoor play. This time allows for movement, fresh air, and unstructured social interaction—essential for emotional regulation, physical development, and peer connection.

Whether climbing, running, exploring nature, or engaging in imaginative games, outdoor play gives students the space to recharge and return to the classroom ready to learn and grow.

LifeLinks/Open Studio

LifeLinks/Open Studio

LifeLinks/Open Studio

LifeLinks is our dedicated time for building real-world skills through life skills practice, executive functioning tasks, community integration, and problem solving. Students might work on practical projects, plan group activities, or learn how everyday systems function in ways that build confidence and independence.

During this block, students also have access to Open Studio, a flexible space where they can choose to participate in music lessons, engage in self-directed art, dive into building projects, or explore STEM activities. This balance of structured learning and open-ended exploration allows students to apply their skills in meaningful, hands-on ways while fostering creativity and autonomy.

MindWind

LifeLinks/Open Studio

LifeLinks/Open Studio

MindWind is our end-of-day reflection time, giving students space to slow down, process their experiences, and prepare for a smooth transition home. Through guided reflection, journaling, discussion, or quiet creative activities, students build awareness of what they’ve learned, how they’ve grown, and what they’re looking forward to next.

Unit-BASED learning

A Day in the Life of our Famous Explorers Unit

In our Famous Explorers unit, each part of

the day is tied to curiosity, discovery, and

leadership. During MindRise, students share

morning check-ins as if they're preparing for

an expedition-choosing tools, naming their

crew, or charting a goal for the day.

During BrainBuild, they explore geography

through mapmaking, calculate distances, or

write in journals from the perspective of

Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta, or Sacagawea.

NeuroFlow could offer time to build miniature

boats in sensory bins or walk a trail like early

pathfinders.

NeuroArts brings the era to life through

music, movement, or visual art inspired by

different cultures encountered by explorers.

In ThinkLab, students might collaborate to

design a new land, invent a navigation tool, or

reenact a historical journey.

Through LifeLinks, we explore essential real-

world skills: decision-making under

uncertainty, collaboration across cultures,

and how to ethically explore new ideas or

places. Students reflect on what kind of

explorers they want to be-curious,

respectful, and courageous.

Each part of the day builds emotional insight,

academic knowledge, and personal growth-

through the eyes of a young explorer.
